‘The Sun getting rid of Page 3? Oh, that will never happen!’

This was the first thought that entered my head when I heard
about the campaign and I don’t think I was alone in thinking this.
But it has happened. Campaigners have successfully made
Rupert Murdoch shake in his boots. The misogynistic view that boobs are news
seems so outdated – in years to come we won’t believe that it used to be the
norm.
It’s 2015. Why do women still need to be campaigning for
equal rights? It’s 100 years from when the suffragettes campaigned for the
right to vote. Shouldn’t 100 years be enough time to end sexism?
The NoMorePage3 campaign says that: “Women say, do and think
so many interesting and incredible things and should be celebrated for their
many achievements. They are people, not things!”
However, there are many people who are disagree and are
upset. If you want to despair for humanity, just go on the #page3 hashtag on
twitter where you can find an array of contrasting opinions.
It’s frustrating, yes. But this is where I feel conflicted.
I don’t think that showing naked women is offensive, I think that women should
have the right to wear or do whatever they want. I am definitely a supporter of
the #FreeTheNipple campaign but I also don’t like that a newspaper publishes
nipples.

Am I contradicting myself by supporting both? Am I a good
feminist or a bad one?
I think the main thing here is that The Sun is a newspaper, and
whether their news is or isn’t 100% accurate or informative, a naked woman
isn’t news. Children shouldn’t grow up and see the objectification of women
laid out bare on the page. If you want some nudity there are PLENTY of other places you can find it, but it shouldn't be a newspaper.
